AI Sci-Fi Novel - “The Seer”

Chapter 4: The Echo of Solitude

1. (Ancient)

Kli trekked alone across the barren land for three days as the sun rose and set three times. He ventured far from his tribe’s familiar territory, stepping into a completely alien world. The landscape here was rougher, with sparse bushes clinging to the red earth like scabs, and the air thick with the smell of dust and dry grass.

Hunger and thirst relentlessly whipped Kli’s body. His lips were cracked, and his steps unsteady. Several times, dehydration made his vision black out, almost causing him to collapse. What kept him going was the unyielding “pattern” in his mind—an invisible arrow pointing eastward, woven from the paths of stars, changing winds, and animal migration routes.

Kli learned to survive alone. He used sharp stone flakes he crafted to scrape edible tender layers from tough bark; he broke open termite nests, using a slender grass stick to gather protein-rich insects. He even, by “pre-reading” the terrain, dug through moist sand deep within a nearly dried-up riverbed to find a murky puddle barely enough for a few licks.

This was a cruel yet equal dialogue between him and nature. Without the tribe’s protection, every bit of energy acquired came at a great cost.

In this extreme solitude, Kli’s perception also sharpened to an unprecedented degree. He was no longer just a hominid foraging for food; he had become a true “observer.” He could tell from the circling height of a vulture if there was an animal carcass nearby; he could distinguish between a passing herbivorous wildebeest and a fierce hyena from a small pile of forgotten droppings.

The world, in Kli’s eyes, was no longer a chaotic collection of isolated events. It transformed into a vast, interconnected web. Every detail was a signpost, pointing to the next possibility.

On the evening of the fourth day, as Kli dragged his exhausted body up a low rocky hill, he saw a sight that invigorated his spirit.

Below the rocky hill lay a vast, bowl-shaped depression. The terrain of the depression was much lower than the surrounding plains, and the vegetation in the center was noticeably lusher than anywhere he had traveled, even boasting several tall acacia trees. Most importantly, he saw a group of baboons gathered in the center of the hollow, which meant one thing: water!

Kli practically tumbled down the rocky hill. As he finally pushed aside the last bush, a hidden underground pool appeared before him. It wasn’t an open puddle, but a natural well surrounded by rocks, with water seeping from underground crevices. The pool was clear, reflecting the twilight sky.

He lunged to the water’s edge, burying his entire head into the cool pool, gulping it down. The sweet spring water quenched his parched throat and insides, as if injecting new life back into his drained body.

This was the triumph of his “foresight,” the reward for his solitary quest, detached from the tribe.

However, as the initial euphoria faded, a deeper sense of solitude washed over Kli. He possessed this life-saving spring all by himself, but where were his tribe members? Were they still in the western mountains, suffering from desperate thirst?

Kli remembered Ona’s worried gaze, and the whimpering young ones suffering from hunger and thirst. Although he had been banished and misunderstood, the bond of blood had not broken.

Just then, Kli heard a familiar roar from a distance, filled with despair and exhaustion. It was Gron’s voice!

Kli immediately climbed a nearby high ground, gazing in the direction of the sound. In the fading glow of the setting sun, he saw a stumbling procession: his tribe. They had circled back from the west, clearly having found nothing. They looked terrible; several elderly members had collapsed and were being dragged by their companions. Even Gron, the strongest, walked with a staggering gait.

They were heading towards death.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Kli dashed down from the high ground, running towards his tribe. As he ran, he let out loud, urgent roars.

When the tribe members saw Kli, their first reaction was caution and hostility. But seeing his wet fur and vibrant demeanor, their expressions shifted.

Kli ran up to them, making no complex gestures. He simply pointed in the direction he had come from, then turned and ran, glancing back and issuing inviting calls as he went.

This time, the instinct for survival overrode all prejudice and doubt. After a brief commotion, the tribe followed Kli. They wagered their last ounce of strength on the companion they had once considered an “outsider.”

When Kli led the tribe to the hidden waterhole, the entire group erupted with excitement. They rushed to the water’s edge, drinking greedily and washing away the dust and exhaustion. The joy of rescue temporarily dissolved all barriers.

Ona approached Kli, gently rubbing her cheek against his shoulder. It was the most direct way to express gratitude and closeness.

Kli watched his tribe, immersed in joy, and felt a warmth in his heart for the first time. His “difference” had, for the first time, truly protected the tribe.

But when Kli looked at Gron, the chief, that warmth quickly cooled.

Gron, his thirst quenched and strength restored, looked at Kli, now surrounded by the tribe, with complex eyes. There was gratitude, confusion, but mostly a sense of apprehension and unease from his challenged authority. He couldn’t grasp how Kli had found this place. In Gron’s worldview, this couldn’t be achieved through observation and thought; it seemed more like… sorcery. A power he couldn’t understand or control.

Kli had saved the tribe, but he also propelled himself into a more precarious position. He was no longer merely a misfit “outsider”; he had become a potential challenger to a “new chief,” an unpredictable entity possessing mysterious power.

Amidst the cheers of his tribe, now safe from peril, only Kli heard the echo of solitude. He knew that this war for survival was far from over.

2. (Near Future)

Prometheus Corporation’s private South Pacific island – “Elysium.”

The name “Elysium” was steeped in myth, and the island itself indeed resembled a mythical creation. When Lin Yao’s maglev shuttle emerged from the underground tunnel, and she first laid eyes on the island’s full panorama, she couldn’t help but be awestruck.

Azure waters encircled the emerald island, with white sand beaches ribboning along its edges. At the island’s heart wasn’t a luxurious resort villa, but a futuristic circular structure built from white nanomaterials and high-strength glass—the Prometheus Asia Gene Research Center. This, Lin Yao realized, was the “golden cage” Marcus Thorne had crafted for her.

“Welcome to your kingdom, Dr. Lin,” Marcus said.

Marcus stood beside her, displaying his domain like a proud monarch.

The lab conditions were beyond imagination. The world’s top-tier ultra-high-speed gene sequencers, AI-assisted data analysis matrices, quantum computers capable of simulating protein folding… these devices, which would require months of waiting to use just once in the outside world, here became her exclusive tools.

“Your team has also arrived,” Marcus said, leading her through the spotless corridors. “We’ve recruited the best genetic engineers, neuroscientists, and bioinformaticians from around the world just for you. They will only follow your instructions.”

Lin Yao spotted her mentor, Professor Chen. He stood before a massive holographic data table, his expression grave. Seeing Lin Yao, he walked over and whispered, “Xiaoyao, the conditions here… they’re too good. Almost frighteningly good.”

“I know,” Lin Yao replied. “We’re like knights invited to a dragon’s lair; the dragon is showing us all its treasures.”

“Only so we’ll willingly help it hatch its eggs,” Professor Chen pointed out, hitting the nail on the head.

Over the next week, Lin Yao immersed herself completely in the work. The skull fossil, named “Kli-01,” was placed in the lab’s most central location. With the help of supercomputers, they quickly decoded the full sequence of the “Seer Gene.”

The results were even more astonishing than they had anticipated.

“It’s not just a ‘pattern processor’,” Lin Yao explained at an internal meeting, pointing to the gene map on the holographic screen. “It’s more like the underlying code for a ‘brain operating system.’ It optimizes how the brain processes visual and auditory information and greatly enhances ‘working memory’ and ‘long-term scenario simulation’ capabilities. Simply put, someone with it can build a model of the future in their mind, a hundred times more complex than an average person, and run simulations.”

A neuroscientist added: “This explains why that ancient human could ‘foresee’ droughts. He didn’t have superpowers; rather, his brain could integrate multidimensional environmental information—celestial phenomena, climate, animal behavior—and calculate the most probable outcome. It’s extreme rationality, appearing like divine revelation in a primitive human.”

Marcus sat in a corner of the meeting room, listening quietly, a satisfied smile on his face.

Research progressed rapidly, but Lin Yao’s internal unease grew by the day. She discovered that she and her team were being perfectly isolated from the outside world by this “Elysium.” Their external communications were tightly monitored, and all research data was stored on independent servers within the island, physically cut off from the outside.

Lin Yao did have primary control over the research, but the “results” of that research were firmly held in Marcus’s hands.

Late one night, as Lin Yao was in her room, trying to contact the outside world through an encrypted backdoor disguised as an academic forum, a knock came at her door.

It was Professor Chen.

“Xiaoyao, I’ve discovered something,” Professor Chen said, his face unusually serious. He locked the door behind him and switched on a small signal jammer.

“What did you find?” Lin Yao asked.

“I used my clearance to look into some past research projects within Prometheus Corporation,” Professor Chen said in a low voice. “Before your ‘Seer Gene,’ they attempted artificial ‘intelligence enhancement’ gene editing at least three times, and all failed. Every single experimental subject developed severe cognitive impairments, eventually leading to mental collapse.”

Lin Yao’s heart sank.

“They weren’t trying to create something from scratch; they were trying to find a perfect ‘template’ to fix their failed work,” Professor Chen stated, emphasizing each word. “The ‘Seer Gene’ is the template they’ve been searching for. They don’t care what loneliness or tragedy this gene might bring to an individual. They only want to replicate its function, to turn it into a mass-producible, stable ‘product.’”

Lin Yao finally understood the true meaning behind Marcus’s “Welcome to write a new chapter.” He wasn’t asking her to interpret history; he was asking her to manufacture the future.

Outside the window, “Elysium” presented a perfect, artificial nightscape. Palm trees swayed under soft lights, and the sound of ocean waves was barely perceptible, muffled by the soundproof glass.

But in Lin Yao’s eyes, at that moment, this beautiful island transformed into a true, cold prison. She, her team, and that ancient gene, dormant for millions of years, had all become prisoners within it.

And she, with the keys in her hand, was the warden who had walked into the cage herself.
