AI Sci-Fi Novel - “The Gazers”

Chapter Eight: Whispers in the Bloodline

1. (Ancient Times)

Kli became a god. He was welcomed back to the cave by his tribe, residing in the warmest, safest central spot. The best food was brought to him first, and the softest animal skins were laid beneath him. His tribesmen no longer dared to meet his gaze, always prostrating themselves before him, expressing their reverence with a mixture of worship and fearful growls.

Chief Gron became Kli’s ‘High Priest.’ He was responsible for interpreting every unconscious movement Kli made, ’translating’ them into the will of the gods. A frown from Kli meant the ‘spirits’ were displeased with the day’s hunt; Kli looking at the sky meant the ‘spirits’ were communicating with the stars, foretelling future weather.

Kli possessed everything, yet he lost everything. He lost his name; the appellation ‘Kli’ vanished, replaced by the tribe’s vague, reverent title of ‘god.’ He lost his companions; Ona no longer dared to approach him as before, like other females, she only secretly watched him from afar. He even lost his freedom of action; his every move was over-interpreted, imbued with sacred meaning. He could no longer run, create, or explore freely as he had in the wilderness.

Kli was enshrined in a magnificent cage, forged by reverence and ignorance. His wisdom became the guarantee of his tribe’s survival. Under his ‘guidance’ (which was actually his observation and inference of natural laws), the tribe always found food and avoided danger. They learned to use fire, learned to use sharper stone tools, and their lives greatly improved.

However, the tribe itself stopped ’thinking.’ They no longer needed to observe, judge, or experiment for themselves. They merely waited for the ‘god’s’ will. Wisdom, once a collective ability requiring exploration and accumulation by the entire tribe, transformed into a monopolized resource, readily available from the ‘god.’ They grew increasingly dependent and increasingly ignorant.

Kli keenly perceived this degradation. He tried to ’teach’ them. He demonstrated to the tribesmen how to knap stone tools and how to identify edible plants. But his ’teaching’ was interpreted by Gron as ’the god displaying his divine power.’ The tribesmen watched in awe, yet no one stepped forward to learn, for in their eyes, such abilities belonged to a god and were beyond the grasp of mere mortals.

Kli felt a despair deeper than any he experienced in the wilderness. In the wilderness, he was merely lonely; here, surrounded by countless ‘kin,’ he felt like a solitary spirit from another world. He began to yearn for the days of his exile, for the time when he could think and create freely. Everything he had done was meant to make the tribe stronger, yet the result was that they became weaker and more dependent. His existence was like an overly massive tree, casting a shadow that blocked all sunlight, causing the undergrowth beneath to wither from lack of light.

One day, Kli saw Ona. She was hiding in a corner, clumsily striking one stone against another, trying to imitate him in making stone flakes. Her hands were already cut in several places.

Kli walked over. The tribesmen immediately grew tense, thinking the ‘god’ was about to issue some command.

Kli ignored them. He crouched before Ona, taking the two stones from her hands. He didn’t make the tool for her himself, but rather held her hands, guiding her, using her strength to strike at the correct angle.

‘Crack!’ A stone flake, crude but sharp enough, was born from Ona’s hands. Ona looked up at Kli in surprise. In Kli’s eyes, for the first time, she didn’t see the distant, indifferent light of a god. What she saw was a familiar gaze, longing to be understood.

In that moment, he wasn’t a god; he was just Kli.

However, this scene, through Gron’s eyes, became a different sight altogether. He saw a threat. Ona, the only individual who dared to approach the ‘god’ and seemed capable of some form of ‘communication’ with the ‘god,’ might just jeopardize his monopolistic position as ‘High Priest.’

That evening, from his ‘divine seat,’ Kli witnessed the tribe’s transformation. Gron summoned all the tribesmen for a grand ceremony around the bonfire. He roared and danced, proclaiming the ‘god’s’ will to the tribe: the god’s power was unique, and any attempt to imitate or steal this power was a blasphemy against the god, inviting disaster.

Gron’s gaze periodically swept towards Ona in the corner. Ona recoiled in fear. The stone flake in her hand, no longer a symbol of wisdom, had become a dangerous, blasphemous piece of evidence.

Kli watched it all in silence. He understood that not only could he not bestow wisdom upon the tribe, but he couldn’t even protect the only person who tried to understand him. He was enshrined high on the altar, yet stripped of his most basic rights as an individual.

He began to ponder a question: a ‘god’ who couldn’t make its kin smarter, a ‘god’ who could only bring dependence and ignorance—was its existence a blessing, or a curse?

The answer to this question, like a venomous thorn, deeply pierced his lonely soul.

2. (Near Future)

“‘The ‘Trojan Horse’ has been compiled. Can we call it the ‘Kli’ program, Doctor?’ Ava Jensen’s voice came through the internal communicator, tinged with suppressed excitement and tension. For the past few days, she and Lin Yao had worked almost non-stop, completely transforming the ’neuron penetration’ algorithm into a highly aggressive and deceptive ‘genetic virus’.”

“‘Yes, a very fitting name,’ Lin Yao replied. She gazed at the complex code shimmering with a ghostly blue light on the holographic screen, her heart filled with mixed emotions.”

The ‘Kli’ program was all of Lin Yao’s hope, and her all-in gamble.

Its core functions were threefold:

  1. Camouflage and Deception: It can perfectly simulate the full activation sequence of the ‘Gazer Gene,’ even demonstrating ‘optimization effects’ more powerful than expected. It will be the most desired, most perfect ‘gift’ for Marcus Thorne.
  2. Latency and Infection: Once the ‘Kli’ program is injected into ‘Adam’s’ ‘superbrain,’ it won’t activate immediately. Like a real virus, it will lie dormant in every neural node of the brain, deeply binding its underlying logic to ‘Adam’s’ operating system until it becomes an inseparable part of ‘Adam’s’ consciousness.
  3. Final Instruction: At the very end of the program lies the true ‘code’ implanted by Lin Yao. This line of code originated from her deduction and empathy for Kli’s fate. It’s not a destructive command, but rather… a ‘question.’ A question that will only be triggered at the moment ‘Adam,’ this ‘superintelligence,’ is truly born and possesses self-awareness—a question that pierces deep into the soul.

“‘Marcus is pressing again,’ Ava said. ‘He says this is the final deadline. If we don’t deliver the ‘ignition program,’ he’ll take ‘drastic measures.’”

“‘Then let’s give him the ‘gift’,’ Lin Yao calmly stated. ‘Initiate the ‘Kli’ program upload protocol.’”

Minutes later, Marcus’s holographic image appeared in the laboratory. He had clearly received the ‘results.’ His face showed unconcealed ecstasy and greed.

“‘A masterpiece! Dr. Lin, this is truly a masterpiece!’ he exclaimed, as if completely forgetting his threats from a few days prior. ‘It’s even more perfect than I imagined! Stable, efficient, and… it even circumvents most of the emotional suppression side effects! How did you do it?’”

“‘I merely reordered a few key regulatory factors, utilizing the principle of quantum entanglement to balance energy distribution between the logical and emotional centers,’ Lin Yao explained without batting an eye, reciting a theory she had prepared long ago.”

“‘Genius! You are a true genius!’ Marcus was utterly convinced by the explanation, or rather, he chose to believe it. ‘Dr. Lin, history will remember your name. You and I will together become the creators of a new world.’”

“‘I am honored,’ Lin Yao replied, lowering her gaze submissively, perfectly playing the role of a conquered scientist.”

“‘The ignition ceremony will take place in 24 hours,’ Marcus announced, his voice slightly trembling with excitement. ‘At that time, I invite you to join me in the B7 district’s main control room to witness the birth of a god.’”

Marcus had actually invited her to be present. This was a display of absolute confidence in his control, as well as a show-off and a demonstration. He wanted her to witness firsthand how her ‘creation’ would serve his grand endeavor.

Lin Yao’s heart skipped a beat. This was an unexpected opportunity.

“‘My pleasure, Mr. Thorne,’ she replied respectfully. The communication ceased.”

“‘He took the bait,’ Ava’s voice was filled with disbelief. ‘He actually believed it.’”

“‘Because the ‘Kli’ program gave him exactly what he wanted. When a person’s desires are too strong, their judgment develops blind spots,’ Lin Yao said. ‘But we can’t let our guard down. Ava, this is the most critical step of the plan.’”

“‘What?’”

“‘The ‘Kli’ program is just a Trojan Horse, but we still need an ‘insider.’’ Lin Yao’s gaze once again turned to the B7 district’s surveillance feed, locking onto the people lying in the life-support pods.”

“‘I’m going to awaken one of them.’”

“‘What?!’ Ava exclaimed, horrified. ‘That’s impossible! Their consciousness is deeply suppressed, and all their vital signs are under Marcus’s surveillance.’”

“‘Not their bodies, but their ‘minds’,’ Lin Yao explained. ‘Prometheus Corporation only monitors their physiological data, but they overlooked the faint quantum consciousness fluctuations within those ‘genius’ brains. Our ‘Kli’ program, while infiltrating ‘Adam’s’ brain, also established a faint data link with these ‘batteries.’”

“‘I will use this link to directly ‘write’ a piece of information, a coordinate, and a simple instruction into the subconscious of one of them. Someone who, before being ‘recycled,’ was a top quantum physicist and… still retained the strongest will to resist.’”

Lin Yao’s gaze locked onto a Chinese-American scientist named ‘David Chen.’ He was Professor Chen’s distant nephew and one of the first geniuses ‘recycled’ by Prometheus Corporation.

“‘I’m going to tell him where B7 district’s physical structural weaknesses are. I’m going to tell him how to use the brain’s quantum fluctuations, at a specific moment, to cause a tiny yet fatal ‘resonance’ in the life-support pod’s energy supply system.’”

“‘The moment ‘Adam’ is born, when all of Marcus’s attention is focused on that ‘god,’ that’s when our ‘insider’ will launch the attack.’”

Ava was stunned. She looked at Lin Yao, feeling that the woman before her was no longer just a scientist. Her calm, her madness, her meticulous planning made her seem like a goddess of vengeance dancing on a knife’s edge.

Lin Yao didn’t know if this plan would succeed. But she knew she couldn’t place all her hopes on a vague, ethereal ‘question.’

She needed chaos. Real chaos, enough to shake ‘Pandora’ to its core.

She wanted Marcus Thorne to understand that those he treated as ‘batteries’ and ‘materials’ were living, breathing humans. And sometimes, human will is more powerful than any technology.

As she pressed the second ’execute’ button, a silent message, like a whisper in the bloodline, crossed the data barrier and quietly flowed into the depths of that captive, slumbering genius mind.
