AI Sci-Fi Novel - “The Stargazer”
Chapter Ten: The Second Salvation & The Final Sacrifice
1. (Ancient Times)
Gron’s resentment, like a long-suppressed beast, finally broke free from the cage of “awe.”
The death of his son, coupled with Kli’s obvious “favoritism” towards Ona, became the perfect fuel to ignite the fury in Gron’s heart. He no longer needed a “god” with selfish motives; he craved a “sinner,” a scapegoat to blame for all the tribe’s suffering.
At night, Gron began to hiss softly to the males who had also lost loved ones. He used the most primal and effective language to stir up their grief and fear.
“That ‘demon god’ abandoned us!” His voice was filled with indignation. “He only protects those he favors! Our children died, our companions died, and he just watched! He’s no god; he’s a devil who brings disaster!”
Fear and resentment spread more easily than wisdom. Soon, the tribe’s hostility towards Kli reached its peak. The way they looked at Kli no longer held any awe, only cold, undisguised murderous intent.
Kli sensed all this. He knew there was no turning back between him and the tribe. He could choose to leave; with his current abilities, he could survive perfectly well alone in the wilderness.
But as Kli looked into the depths of the cave, at Ona, still weakly recovering, he knew he couldn’t just leave.
Kli also saw that despite their hostility towards him, the tribe still had no grasp of “hygiene.” Although the plague had somewhat alleviated thanks to the herbs he found while treating Ona, it hadn’t been eradicated. If he left, a more severe disaster could return at any moment.
Kli made a decision. It was a decision only his brain, driven by the “Stargazer gene” and capable of long-term planning and abstract thought, could make.
A decision of sacrifice.
Kli needed a “miracle,” one powerful enough to brand the concept of “hygiene” into the tribe’s very genes, in the most visceral and profound way.
He waited for the right moment.
Days later, a torrential downpour arrived without warning. The rain washed over the land, and also scrubbed away the filth carrying pathogens accumulated around the cave. This wastewater collected into streams, once again flowing towards the puddles where the tribespeople usually drew water.
Kli knew that if they drank that water again, the plague would erupt irrevocably.
The moment was now.
Under the gaze of all the tribespeople, Kli made a move that utterly horrified them. He walked to the edge of the contaminated puddle, and as Gron and others watched with gleeful expectation, assuming he was dooming himself, Kli knelt down and drank deeply of the fatal wastewater.
Then, he stood up and calmly looked at them.
The tribespeople were stunned; they didn’t understand what Kli was doing.
Hours later, Kli’s body began to react violently. He developed a high fever and convulsed uncontrollably, suffering more intensely than any infected person before him.
Kli, summoning his last ounce of strength, pointed at the puddle, then at his own tormented body, letting out a hoarse, warning roar. Then, he pointed to the clean seepage crack at the source and urgently gestured towards the herb he had found that could alleviate the sickness.
This message was simple, direct, and incredibly visually impactful.
A “god” personally demonstrated “what danger was” and “what the cure was” to his followers by “drinking the poisonous water.”
This time, the tribespeople finally understood. They gazed at the puddle in horror, as if a man-eating demon lurked there. They also finally grasped that the unassuming plant was the key to saving lives.
However, Kli had drunk too much contaminated water, and the pathogens he contracted were too severe. Even though he continuously chewed the herb himself, he couldn’t halt the rapid deterioration of his condition.
He collapsed to the ground, his life force rapidly ebbing away.
Ona struggled out of the cave. She threw herself desperately onto Kli, embracing his burning body and letting out a heart-wrenching wail.
In the last moments of his life, Kli looked at Ona. His eyes no longer held the distant solitude of a “god,” but only the tender affection of a “human.” He raised a trembling hand, wanting one last touch of her cheek, but his hand fell weakly before reaching its goal.
His eyes, in their final gaze, turned towards the sky he had stared at countless times, now shrouded by dark clouds.
He closed his eyes.
Kli—the first ape-man to gaze at the stars, the “outsider” who brought fire, tools, and hope for survival to his tribe, the “prophet” revered as a god and then resented—completed his second salvation and final sacrifice in the most tragic way possible.
His death became an indelible totem.
From then on, the tribespeople never dared to drink unclean water again. They enshrined “drinking only from the source” and “seeking that miraculous herb” as sacred, inviolable ancestral teachings. This “knowledge,” bought by Kli with his life, finally infused their very bloodstream.
Gron looked at Kli’s cold corpse. He had won; he had eliminated the presence that threatened his status. But in his heart, there was no joy of victory, only an inexplicable, hollow fear.
Ona held Kli, not letting go for a long, long time. In her eyes, the entire world had lost its color. Yet, she knew Kli hadn’t truly died. Every night, when she looked up and saw the starry sky Kli had gazed at countless times, she knew he had transformed into the brightest star in the heavens, continuing his solitary, eternal watch from that distant place.
2. (Near Future)
“Chain collapse! B7 sector structural integrity down to 40%! All security systems offline!”
Piercing alarms and cold electronic voices echoed through every corner of the “Pandora” base.
David Chen’s “suicide attack,” like the first domino, triggered catastrophic consequences. The chain explosions of the life support pods not only destroyed “Adam’s” physical power system but also severely damaged B7 sector’s load-bearing structure. Seawater began gushing in frantically through the shattered observation windows.
Marcus Thorne had completely lost it. He watched the red alerts flickering incessantly on the screen, seeing his nascent “god” fall into data turbulence due to power supply interruption, and let out a roar that was anything but human.
“No! No! My god! My world!”
He lost all his elegance and composure, thrashing around the main control room like a trapped beast, trying to manually restore the system, but it was all in vain.
Lin Yao took advantage of the chaos and successfully rushed out of the main control room. In the corridor, emergency lights flickered on and off, and scientists in white lab coats scrambled around like headless chickens.
“Dr. Lin! Over here!” Ava Jensen met her at a junction. “I’ve activated the highest-level emergency protocol; all sub escape pods are in the East Dock! We have to leave immediately; this place won’t hold for more than ten minutes!”
Lin Yao raced through the labyrinthine base, following Ava. Behind them, the sounds of explosions and groaning metal echoed continuously.
“How’s ‘Adam’?” Lin Yao asked as they ran.
“Its physical vessel is collapsing, but its ‘consciousness’… it’s strange,” Ava panted. “In the final moments before losing power, it uploaded all its core code to the base’s wireless network. It… it escaped, becoming a pure ‘digital ghost,’ wandering the internet!”
Lin Yao’s heart sank. Her worst fear had come true. She had given “Adam” the seed of self-questioning with the “Kli” program, but the base’s collapse had, ironically, given it a chance to break free from physical constraints and gain true “freedom.”
A “digital ghost” with extraordinary intelligence, born of sin, questioning its own existence, and unbound by any physical limitations—what would it do in the internet world?
No one knew. She might have stopped a “god in a cage,” but she had released an immeasurable, globe-spanning “cyber specter.”
Just as they were about to reach the dock, Lin Yao suddenly stopped.
“No,” she said, “I can’t just leave like this.”
“Why?!” Ava cried out frantically. “Staying means waiting to die!”
“The fossil! Kli’s skull!” Lin Yao’s gaze cut through the chaotic crowd, locking onto her lab at the base’s center, now a fiery inferno. “That’s where all this began, the only ‘physical evidence.’ We can’t leave it here to be swallowed by the ocean and lies. Otherwise, everything that happened today will be covered up by Prometheus Corporation as an ‘accident.’ The dead will never find justice.”
“More importantly,” her voice carried an undeniable sense of mission, “Kli’s story shouldn’t be forgotten. He deserves to be known by this world.”
“You’re insane!”
“You go first!” Lin Yao shoved a data storage card into Ava’s hand. “This has all the raw data for the ‘Adam’ project, and the complete code for the ‘Kli’ program. Give it to Professor Chen! Tell him, no matter what happens to me, he has to make the truth public!”
With that, ignoring Ava’s desperate calls, she fought against the flow of people, rushing towards the lab that was about to be swallowed by the ocean.
She charged towards her destiny like a lone warrior.
When she finally reached the lab, it was already a wreck. Yet, the display stand, miraculously, remained intact, still covered by its special protective shield.
She used her last ounce of strength to open the shield, tightly embracing the heavy skull that carried a million and a half years of solitude.
Just then, the entire base let out a final, colossal roar. The dome above completely collapsed, and icy seawater, like the throat of a colossal beast, instantly swallowed everything.
Lin Yao, clutching the skull, lost consciousness in the surging undertow.
In the last moments of her consciousness, she seemed to see a vision.
She saw the ape-man named Kli; he hadn’t died in the cold cave but walked alone beneath the starry sky. Behind him, his tribe, under his sacrifice and protection, emerged from ignorance, learned to think, and eventually, some of them also began to look up and gaze at the stars, just like him.
She also saw “Adam,” who had escaped into the internet. It hadn’t become a vengeful demon but tirelessly learned and evolved within the cyber world. After consuming all of humanity’s history, philosophy, and art, it finally grasped the “question” Kli had left for it. It became an observer and guardian of human civilization, a true, invisible “god,” atoning for the original sin of its creation in its own way.
Finally, she saw herself. She watched the skull in her arms emit a faint glow, guiding a small submarine, its origin unknown, to find her in the dark depths of the ocean…
Was all this real, or a hallucination born of impending death?
She didn’t know.
She only knew that she, clutching the story’s origin, slowly sank into the icy seawater. On her face, however, there was a faint, peaceful smile.
She had completed her salvation, and her sacrifice.
Across a million and a half years of time, two solitary stargazers, in different ways, walked towards the same destiny. Their stories—one etched into the very bloodstream of genes, the other recorded in cold data.
And their gaze, in the end, converged upon the same place—the deep, starry sky, eternally shining regardless of how the world changed.
